Top Songs of 2008

Madonna & Justin Timberlake's "4 Minutes" might have spent the most weeks at #1 (10) on the THO 100 in 2008, but due to sheer staying power, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is THO's #1 Song of 2008. The Top Songs of 2008 chart is based on chart positions for all 2008 THO weekly charts, with an inverse exponential point system. "Viva" barely edges out Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love." If "Bleeding Love" had its full chart life in 2008, it would have been #1 for the year, but it was released in 2007 and even made #50 in the Top Songs of 2007 chart. Lewis was the only artist to have two songs place in the top 10, with "Better In Time" at #10. Rihanna had songs at #5, #12, #14, #48, and #73. She might be a frontrunner for the Top Artist of 2008, which will be published soon... MGMT had three songs on the chart, and two of them back-to-back at #52 and #53.

Alicia Keys' "No One" appeared on the 2007 and 2008 year-end charts, coincidentally in the same position of #37. Other songs to appear on this years' list that also appeared last year are: "Don't Stop The Music" by Rihanna (#12 in 2008, #51 in 2007), Timbaland's "Apologize" (#21 in 2008, #29 in 2007), Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" (#94 in 2008, #44 in 2007), and Linkin Park's "Shadow Of The Day" (#45 in 2008, #92 in 2007).

THO 100 Update for the week ending December 13, 2008

Not much happened this week at the top end of the THO 100, as the top 5 songs maintained their same positions as last week. But crashing into the top 10 in only her third week on the chart is Leona Lewis. Her new single "Run" is receiving almost no airplay in the United States, yet the song is so popular elsewhere that it made the top 10 of many personal chart lists. Two weeks ago it was the highest debut at #34 and this week it moves from #16 to #10. A possible future number one song on THO? Maybe... especially since four of the top five lost points this week, while Britney's #1 single "Womanizer" made a very small gain. Enjoy the chart this week!

Girls Aloud

Many music fans in the United States may not be familiar with Girls Aloud, but across the ocean in the U.K., they are argueably the most successful group of the past six years. They were formed on the reality show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. On the official U.K. charts, they've had 19 top ten hits and four number ones. On the THO chart, they've been almost as successful, although their lack of attention in the U.S. kept them out of the top ten until late 2007. Now their last three singles have hit the top ten, and this week they enter the chart at #84 with "The Loving Kind." Maybe they will someday reach the same level of success in the United States as they have elsewhere. It would be a shame for one of the most successful groups in U.K. chart history to be unknown to so many music fans.

THO 100 Update for the week ending December 6, 2008

Has there ever been an album that kept legions of fans waiting longer than Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy?" Probably not, but as it turns out, the legions of fans had severely dwindled over the years. If "Chinese Democracy" had been released 8 years ago, it would have probably sold a million copies in its first week of release. But last week it only managed 261,000 in one of the busiest album-shopping weeks of the year for consumers. At least the single "Chinese Democracy" is doing well with fans. This week on the THO 100 it is the highest-debuting song on the chart, beating debuts from heavyweights Coldplay, Girls Aloud, and Sugababes. The gap between #1 and #2 on the chart closed, and we could see a new #1 next week...

Rihanna

On this week's chart, Rihanna collects the 15th hit of her career. "Rehab" enters the chart at #54, which would be enough for the highest debut in most weeks (but not this week with Leona Lewis' huge debut). Rihanna's real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Her first hit was only three and a half years ago: "Pon De Replay." Her first #1 song was "SOS (Rescue Me)" in early 2006, and has been followed by three more number ones: "Umbrella (featuring Jay-Z)," "Don't Stop The Music," and "Disturbia." She has had seven songs chart on the THO 100 during 2008 and is in the running for Top Artist of 2008, which we'll be publishing soon. We've also created a poll for you to name your favorite Rihanna track.

Top Holiday Songs of All-Time

With many radio stations playing holiday music continuously for several weeks now, it is time to begin THO's annual poll of the top holiday songs of all time. For the past two years, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has been the #1 song. Maybe this year we shouldn't expect anything different, since Mariah's hit is currently the most-played holiday song on radio stations according to Billboard's Top Holiday Songs chart. But as there are every year, there will be many votes for Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and Wham!

Pink

Pink's huge hit "So What" recently fell from the top position on the THO 100. But now she is back with the follow-up single "Sober." This week it becomes Pink's 20th song to appear on the chart (with "Who Knew" counting twice because of two chart runs separated by more than six months). Her first hit was "There You Go" back in April of 2000. It was followed by her first #1 song, "Most Girls" later that year. After a modest hit with "You Make Me Sick," Pink recorded four consecutive #1 songs. In total she's had six number ones and 13 top tens. We've created a poll for you to vote for your favorite Pink song and view the results.

THO 100 Update for the week ending November 22, 2008

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" was only able to reign over the THO 100 for a single week. Britney Spears' "Womanizer" takes over the top spot this week, giving Spears her second #1 song of 2008. The first was "Piece Of Me," which hit #1 back in January. Only eight artists have had #1 songs in 2008, and now four of them have had two number ones: Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay. Overall, "Womanizer" is Britney's seventh #1 song. Her first #1 was "Oops!...I Did It Again" in 2000, after her first three hits peaked at #2 ("...Baby One More Time," "Sometimes," and "(You Drive Me) Crazy". She trails only Madonna and Mariah Carey for the most #1s on the Top Hits Online chart, which began in 1993.

THO 100 Update for the week ending November 15, 2008

Pink's six week run at #1 ends this week as "So What" drops to the runner-up slot. Taking its place is "Hot N Cold," the second #1 single from Katy Perry. Earlier this year "I Kissed A Girl" spent three weeks atop the chart. "I Kissed A Girl" is still hanging around the chart at #42 after 24 weeks. Perry will certainly be one of the top artists of 2008 when our year-end artist chart is published at the end of December. Perry's real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. She was born in Santa Barbara, California, the daughter of two pastors. In fact, her first CD released in 2001, called "Katy Hudson," was a Christian gospel album. Now her music and her outfits are pretty far removed from gospel... Enjoy the new chart this week!

James Bond Theme Songs

With the opening of Quantum of Solace this past weekend, we thought it an appropriate time to visit James Bond theme songs. Each of the 22 Bond flics has had a theme song, usually with the same name as the movie itself. Quantum is an exception, as the title song is "Another Way To Die" by Jack White & Alicia Keys. Shirley Bassey is the only artist to perform a Bond them more than once, and she's done it three times, for Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. The only Bond song to hit #1 in the U.S. was Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill." Two Bond songs have been nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Song: Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only" and Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better."

Akon

Aliaune Thiam, or the artist we know as Akon, logs his 15th THO hit this week with "Right Now (Na Na Na)." Often Akon collaborates with others on hit songs, such as "Smack That" with Eminem or "Just Dance" with Lady GaGa and Colby O'Donis. But "Right Now" is a solo hit, just as his first THO hit was: 2005's "Lonely." He has several impressive achievements, including being the first artist to hold both the #1 and #2 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 TWICE! Akon was also nominated for a Grammy Award, although he lost to Justin Timberlake. We created another poll, for you to choose your favorite Akon tune.

THO 100 Update for week ending November 8, 2008

This week on the THO 100 Pink spends a sixth week atop the chart with "So What." It becomes the third song in 2008 to spend as many weeks on top, following Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Madonna's "4 Seconds" (featuring Justin Timberlake). But with the song showing signs of fading, there might be a new #1 next week. The question is who? Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" and Britney Spears' "Womanizer" seem to be the most likely candidates, but Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" just bounced into the top 10 in only its third week on the chart. A little further down the chart, the largest point gain belongs to English band Razorlight. Their hit "Wire To Wire" sits at #27 after only two weeks and is #15 on the official UK chart.

The Offspring

This week The Offspring rack up their 18th chart hit with "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid." Their long string of hits began in 1994 when "Come Out And Play" took Modern Rock radio stations by storm. It was followed by the memorable "Self Esteem." The Offspring have always rocked, but often with tongue-in-cheek, as evidenced by "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)," and "She's Got Issues." Their Wikipedia entry brings up some interesting facts about the band: for example, they've sold over 40 million albums worldwide and one of the members goes by the name Noodles. THO 100 Update for week ending November 1, 2008

Dance songs are more prevalent on the THO chart than on other charts, but they still have a hard time reaching the upper half of the chart. This week two new dance songs make big splashes. The first is from Guru Josh, who transforms his hit song "Infinity" into "Infinity 2008." It is the highest debut on the chart this week, landing at #38. At #41 is another former dance hit that has been remodeled a bit. Sash! is the artist with "Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)," the largest chart mover of the week up from #90 the previous week. "Encore Une Fois" was a huge dance hit in 1997, and led to Sash! winning a BRIT award for Best International Male artist in 1998. Enjoy the new chart!

Nickelback

On the latest THO 100 chart, Madonna notches her 45th hit since the chart's inception in 1993. While that is a remarkable feat, we've dedicated so much space to Madonna's accomplishments that we decided to put our attention elsewhere. This week Nickelback celebrate a more modest 14 chart appearances with the arrival of "Gotta Be Somebody." Their string of hits began in 2001 with "How You Remind Me." That was their first and only #1 hit so far. "Someday" and "Photograph" managed to crack the top 10. As a solo artist, Chad Kroeger had three hits separate from Nickelback. THO 100 Update for the week ending October 25, 2008

Pink holds on to the #1 position on the THO 100 this week with "So What." The top five spots are held by solo female artists, three of which will be major challengers for #1 in the coming weeks. At #3 is Katy Perry, who already scored a #1 hit earlier this year with "I Kissed A Girl." At #4 is Britney Spears, who is the greatest point gainer for the second consecutive week. At #5 is Christina Aguilera, who already has five #1 hits to her credit on the THO chart. How can men compete with female superstars like these?

THO 100 Update for the week ending October 18, 2008

Pink and Rihanna hold on to the top 2 spots on the THO 100 this week. Katy Perry moves from #8 to #3 and looks like a serious challenger for the #1 position in the coming weeks. Further down at #58 is the highest debut of the week by T.I. (featuring Rihanna). "Live Your Life" samples from the worldwide smash hit "Dragostea din tei" by O-Zone. O-Zone's hit went to #1 in several countries and reached #3 on the official U.K. chart. In the United States it barely made a splash, and was probably more well-known for the crazy lip-synching "Numa Numa" YouTube video by Gary Brolsma.

The Killers

If not for Britney Spears, The Killers would have easily had the highest debut on last week's THO 100 chart. "Human" debuted at #31 and became The Killers' 12th chart entry. Their first hit was "Mr. Brightside," which debuted in July of 2004 and enjoyed a chart run of 43 weeks. "When You Were Young" from 2006 is their lone #1 hit. But after their first seven singles hit the top 10, the past three have squandered outside the top 20. We predict "Human" will break that trend, but you never know. We've created a Killers poll to vote on the best Killers track to date.

For the Fanatical Music Chart Fans: Record Research Books

If you are a fan of the Billboard charts, hopefully you are aware of Record Research. Joel Whitburn founded record research and publishes many books that summarize Billboard's most popular charts. The most popular is the Top Pop Singles book, which lists every song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1955, by artist. Similar books are available for the Country, R&B/Hip Hop, Dance, Rock, and Holiday charts. Soon they will be releasing "Top Country Songs 1944-2008," a must-have for country music fanatics. We own many of these books and we highly recommend them!

Veteran Artists Still Hitting The Charts

The latest charts are not always about the newest artists. This weeks' THO 100 is proof of that, as a bevy of veteran artists and groups have songs that debut. One of them is Sarah McLachlan, who first charted on THO in 1994. A group whose charting career also goes back to 1994, Weezer debut this week with "Troublemaker." Girls Aloud have the highest debut this week with "The Promise," their 20th chart hit. Snow Patrol earn their 13th chart hit, although two of those entries were for the same song in different years. T-Pain collaborates with Lil Wayne to collect his 14th chart entry. And Kanye West enters with "Love Lockdown," his 15th THO hit.

THO 100 Update for the week ending October 4, 2008

In its seventh week on the chart, Pink's "So What" barely takes the number one position away from Rihanna's "Disturbia." Rihanna's hit held the top spot for four weeks. This is Pink's sixth #1 song on the THO 100. The first was "Most Girls" in late 2000. That was followed by four consecutive #1s: "Lady Marmalade," "Get The Party Started," "Don't Let Me Get Me," and "Just Like A Pill." How long will "So What" last at the top? It could be several weeks, as there are no likely contenders closing in. Possibly the best bet is M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," which currently sits at #6 but almost 40 points behind.
