THO's Top Hits Of 2009

It should come as no surprise that 2009's biggest hit, according to our calculations, comes from the artist who probably made the biggest splash in 2009. "Poker Face" from Lady GaGa was #1 for seven weeks, and spent 23 weeks in the top 10 of the THO 100, seven weeks more than any other song. It spent 33 weeks inside the top 40, five weeks more than any other song. Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" spent the most weeks on the THO 100 in 2009, with 47, and finished at #4 on the year-end chart. The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift all had two songs in the top 20, but it was once again Lady GaGa leading with three songs in the top 10. When we compile the Top Artists of 2009 chart in the next few days, should we expect anyone else to come out on top?

THO 100 update for week ending December 19, 2009

The last THO chart of the year sees the return of one of THO's biggest artists over the past decade: Jennifer Lopez. Her latest single, "Louboutins," has the highest debut, besting new entries from Pearl Jam, Allison Iraheta, and Three Days Grace. We last saw J-Lo briefly in early 2008 with her single "Hold It, Don't Drop It," which only made it to #31 on the chart. The last chart of 2009 also has Lady GaGa's "Bad Romance" on top for a sixth week. Next week's chart will be frozen, as it always is, so Miss GaGa will sit tight for a seventh week. Instead, look for our 2009 year-end chart due soon.

THO 100 Update for the week ending December 5, 2009

Two months ago most people had never heard of Jason DeRulo. While he still isn't a household name, his radio hit "Whatcha Say" seems to be gaining fans daily. The song originally only received airplay in the United States, but now the UK, Australia, and other countries are jumping onboard. This week it, after heavy promotion in the UK, it jumps from #27 to #11 on the THO 100. The highest debut on the chart belongs to Susan Boyle, another name that almost no one knew one year ago. Now she has a best-selling album and her single "Wild Horses" arrives on the chart at #51. Meanwhile at the top of the chart, Lady GaGa spends a fourth week at #1 with "Bad Romance" while Britney Spears remains stuck at #2.

THO 100 Update for week ending November 14, 2009

Last week it was expected, and written here, that Britney Spears would take over the #1 position on the THO 100 with her latest single, "3." But after all the data was compiled, the hottest song online by our measure is "Bad Romance" by Lady GaGa. It catapults from #11 to #1 in only its fourth week on the chart and barely beats out Spears' hit. "Bad Romance" caps an incredible year for Lady GaGa, who spent time at #1 in January and February with "Just Dance" followed by time at #1 in April and May with "Poker Face." Given that there are only six chart weeks left in 2009, and the fast rise of "Bad Romance," it could still be the #1 song when the calendar turns. Either way, Lady GaGa has a good chance of topping our list of the Top Artists of 2009, which is compiled from all 2009 chart data... coming soon.

THO 100 Update for week ending November 7, 2009

UK sensation Cheryl Cole keeps her post atop the THO 100 this week with "Fight For This Love." Cole barely holds off Britney Spears, whose latest single "3" appears poised to take over the #1 position next week. "3" moves from #5 to #2 this week. Other gainers inside the top 10 are Leona Lewis, Black Eyed Peas, and Owl City. This week marks the 52nd chart week (one entire year) for "Use Somebody" by Kings Of Leon. The song first appeared on the November 15, 2008 THO 100 and hasn't left since. It joins a short list of only 16 other songs to spend 52 weeks on the chart. Despite its longetivity, "Use Somebody" has not cracked the top 10, peaking at #11. Currently at #81, it has a shot at remaining on the chart beyond this week. Only 10 songs have spent more than 52 weeks on the chart. The record is 85 weeks by Alanis Morissette's "You Learn."

THO 100 Update for week ending October 24, 2009

In a surprising move, "Uprising" by Muse slides into the #1 position on the latest THO 100 chart. Shakira's "She Wolf" and Madonna's "Celebration" both lost points compared to last week, allowing Muse to back into the top spot even though their hit lost points as well. Judging by the the points allotted to the top songs, it becomes the "weakest" number one song in years on this chart. Nevertheless it is Muse' first #1 song on THO. Their first hit, "Muscle Museum," nearly made it to the top but stalled at #2 in 1999. "Uprising" is the 12th number one song of 2009. Who will rise to the top next week is anyone's guess. The three songs mentioned previously all have a chance, as do Alexandra Burke's "Bad Boys" and Robbie Williams' "Bodies." But after next week, it is widely expected that the momentum of Britney Spears' latest hit "3" will carry it to the top.

THO 100 Update for the week ending October 10, 2009

This week Madonna does what no other artist has done since 2005... her single "Celebration" returns to the top of the THO 100 after a previous two-week run on the Sept 26 and Oct 3 charts. Last week she gave way to Shakira's "She Wolf," which drops to #3 this week. In early 2005, Green Day's "Boulevard Of Broken Drams" spent 13 weeks atop the chart, then allowed Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl" a week at the top before return to #1 for a single week. Further down the chart, Jay-Z (featuring Alicia Keys) has the greatest point gainer for the second straight week with "Empire State Of Mind." Britney Spears has a huge debut at #44 with "3." Other debuts come from Chipmunk, Editors, Backstreet Boys, Alicia Keys, Train, and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

THO 100 Update for the week ending April 12, 2008

Rock band Muse are currently riding their 11th THO hit, which may end up being their biggest. This week "Uprising" is both the largest point gainer and has the largest chart move. It is their biggest hit since "Starlight" in 2006. Muse hails from England, and they will soon release their fifth studio album "The Resistance" on September 15th in the U.S., on which "Uprising" can be found. No big surprises at the top of the chart, as the Black Eyed Peas and Green Day hold on to #1 and #2, respectively. Shakira looks poised to shake things up next week, as she moves from #6 to #3 on this chart.

THO 100 Update for the week ending August 22, 2009

The super-couple of Jay-Z and Beyonce are perhaps the most successful musical couple of this decade. Beyonce has been one of the most popular pop singers of the 2000s while Jay-Z has been at the top of the hip hop world. This week on the THO 100 they prove that they are still a superpower. Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams" is the largest point gainer on the chart while Jay-Z's "Run This Town" has the largest chart move of 30 positions. "Sweet Dream's is Beyonce's 11th top 10 hit, not including her hits with Destiny's Child. Jay-Z has had four top 10 hits on THO, but only because it is difficult for hip hop songs to make it that far. Enjoy the chart this week!

THO 100 Update for week ending August 15, 2009

The new on the latest THO 100 chart isn't what happened at the top - the top six songs did not change positions. The action was further down the chart. Shakira's hot new hit had the largest point gain and blasted into the top 10 after only four weeks on the chart. The highest debut came from Madonna, who has released the title track from her upcoming "Celebration" album. No surprisingly, the track has one of the highest debuts of 2009, landing at #33. The lower reaches of the top 100 chart include nine other debuts, including Nelly Furtado, Bloc Party, and Jay-Z.

THO 100 Update for week ending August 1, 2009

Not surprisingly, the Black Eyed Peas take over the #1 position on the THO 100 this week. "I Gotta Feeling" has been the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks now, and the song's popularity has been spreading through the rest of the world. This week it ends David Guetta's run at the top with "When Love Takes Over" (featuring Kelly Rowland). "Love" was #1 for four weeks. Just prior to that, it was the Black Eyed Peas who sat in the top spot for five weeks with "Boom Boom Pow." "Boom" and "Love" are the Peas' only number one songs, although they've had four other songs reach the top five, starting with "Where Is The Love" in 2003. Will their current #1 last as long as "Boom Boom Pow" did? We think it probably will, because after Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield," it will take a few weeks for other songs' popularity to rise to the same level. But we'll see what happens...

THO 100 Update for week ending July 25, 2009

The biggest debut this week comes from probably the smallest performer on the chart. She is definitely not known for her height, but Shakira packs one of the biggest voices, especially on this weeks' THO 100. Her latest single, "She Wolf," debuts at #52, easily in front of other debuts by Chicane, The Arctic Monkeys, Colbie Caillat, All-American Rejects, and Sugababes.

At the top of the chart, David Guetta holds on for another week at #1 with "When Love Takes Over" (featuring Kelly Rowland). Although we don't know exactly what will happen, most bets are on Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield" or the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" becoming the new #1 song. "Feeling" is the charts' largest point gainer this week.

THO 100 Update for the week ending July 18, 2008

This week on the THO 100, David Guetta holds off all challengers to retain the #1 position. "When Love Takes Over" (featuring Kelly Rowland) will spend its 3rd week atop the chart. One of the challengers is UK pop sensation La Roux, with their single "Bulletproof." Music fans don't seem to mind singer Elly Jackson's crazy hair, as the song moves from #5 to #4 and has a serious shot at reaching #1 next week. At least three other songs are capable of being #1 in the coming weeks, including Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield," Lady GaGa's "Paparazzi," and Linkin Park's "New Divide." Enjoy the chart this week!
